Ocoee
Local folklore has it that Ocoee's pioneers
got the name "Ocoee" from an Indian word meaning "no cold." The late
twentieth century settlers would probably say a more appropriate meaning would be
"all roads lead there."
The fastest growing of the 13 cities in
Orange County, the city seems to have a lock on the most important real
estate quality - location, location, location! With the Florida Turnpike and
the East-West Expressway, as well as State Road 50 and the future Western Beltway,
Ocoee residents are now within 5-30 minutes of downtown Orlando, all the attractions, the
airport, and most major employment centers in greater Orlando. This may be one reason that
2,000 families have chosen to build their homes in Ocoee over the past five years.
But roads and the convenience they provide are not the only reason Ocoee's population has
grown steadily from 12,778 in 1990 to nearly 20,000 today. Although it may still be
referred to as a bedroom community, commercial real estate growth has also brought many
comforts and conveniences - as well as jobs - to the city. Health Central, a 141-bed,
state-of-the-art medical facility, calls Ocoee its home. Already the city's largest
employer, the hospital recently announced plans to add real estate for additional medical
office space and assisted living facilities. There's also the new, beautifully designed
West Oaks Mall which opened in October of 1996 with 1.1 million square feet of premium retail real
estate and more to follow. The mall will add many economic benefits from property and
sales tax revenues to the 2,000+ jobs it has created. But long time residents and
the growing number of new families will tell you that what brought them here is the
small-town flavor and friendly atmosphere. A place where you can still find small
businesses that appreciate your patronage, a place with great schools. Ocoee is a
community that counts as its finest attributes community events like craft fairs, Founders
Day, the annual Christmas parade, Pop Warner football, little league, baseball and
soccer.
Current predictions show that growth will
continue, with it eventually becoming the second largest city
in Orange County behind only Orlando. It is already the second largest city in
the county in terms of real estate area. Much of the undeveloped land is zoned
commercial and industrial, with the perfect location available for nearly every business
need. Industry is already quite diverse and includes citrus, manufacturing, retail,
medical, professional services, and hotel/resort accommodations. The existing and future
highway networks will ensure increased commercial activity. Already the home of one of the
largest food distributors and the world's largest auto auction, Ocoee is poised to become
a place where everyone can live, work, and play.
